Concord Township is a 36-square-mile area in Miami County, Ohio, established in 1807. I bet few people who live there know that they live in a Concord. They might say they live in northwest Ohio, or Miami County, but no one says they are from Concord. Most would say “I live in Troy.” Concord Township is a 36-square-mile area in Miami County, Ohio, established in 1807, that largely surrounds the city of Troy. Geographically, the city of Troy, Ohio encompasses most of Concord. Of the 31,137 residents of Concord Township, 26,305 live in Troy. This makes Concord Township, Miami County Ohio the fifth most populated Concord behind Concord, California, Concord,North Carolina, Concord Township in Elkhart Indiana, and Concord New Hampshire.
I had made arrangements to meet Doug and Wanda Tremblay at the Museum of Troy. who greeted us with punch and cookies. As they showed us around their museum, we had a chat about the early history of the area. Miami County was named after the native people who spanned parts of Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. They were forced off their land and relocated to Oklahoma, but the name remains. As was true elsewhere in Ohio, Miami County was"laid off" into grids of largely underpopulated lands. In 1807, a committee of three men, Samuel Jones, John North and another man whose name is lost to history, were appointed to name three adjoining counties. Mr.Jones said that since all the people all worked in harmony in the work of the church and with clearing the land that he would select the name “Union.” John North, remarked that “Union” was a particularly good name, but that the residents of his county were just as harmonious and united, so they deserved another suitable name, so he selected the name “Concord.”
