I thought my four-day trip to Concord, North Carolina was pretty well organized: two days in North Carolina, one day in Concord South Carolina and a day returning to Concord Tennessee. Concord, NC deserved two days. It is the second largest Concord, and I had appointments with a former city councillor, the current mayor, and a newspaper reporter. I had booked a tour of the city at 11AM on the second day. The first day went as planned. Jim Ramseur was not only a city councillor, he was also an avid historian. Where things started to get tricky was when Jim mentioned that there were two other Concords in North Carolina. When I got back to my hotel, I googled it, and sure enough, buried deep under the listings for the city of Concord were two Concord townships in NC in Sampson and Person counties. I really didn't want make a second trip down, so I set my alarm for 2 30AM.
I was on the road by 2:45 AM. It was a seven and a quarter round trip, plus time to take pictures and get gas, so I was cutting it close if I was going to be back for my 11AM guided tour of downtown Concord.
Fortunately the roads were wide and empty, so I beat Waze. When I arrived in Sampson County ,it was still dark. I stopped at Concord School Road, and took a couple of pictures in the dark. I drove around a bit; there was an auto body repair nearby but nothing else.
When I write up these trip summaries, I check to see if there is any additional information available on-line. Sometimes this adds useful information like the date of the founding of the township or the current population. Unfortunately, when I googled "Concord, Sampson County, NC" I discovered the Concord Baptist Church (established in 1842) 17.8 miles away. For a few minutes I panicked. "Oh, no there is another Concord in North Carolina." To my relief, it turns out that Sampson in the second largest county in North Carolina, and yes, I did visit the Concord, Sampson County, North Carolina, so I can knock it off the list.
